Dear Members of the Press, dear Friends;
We are angry,
It has been six full days since the climate summit – for which we have been waiting and whose organization has taken a long time - about the future of the existence of life has started.
We are angry,
That during these six days, more than 100 governmental officials, more than 15,000 representatives are bargaining and nothing more;
We are angry,
Because the allegedly most advanced democracies of the world, are taking decisions regarding our lives behind closed doors.
We are angry,
Because the financial fund that has been allocated by the developed countries in remuneration for their historical responsibilities would not be enough “even to buy us coffins”.
We are angry,
As they still think about making profits in the face of the greatest catastrophe that has been faced by humanity and the planet; and talk about carbon trade.
We are angry,
Because the developed countries who are responsible for the global warming per se, are withdrawing from their responsibilities.
We are angry,
About the fact that the government officials claiming to represent us are acting as if they are the spokespeople for the corporations.
We are angry,
Because of the terrifying betrayal currently taking place in the Bella Center, Copenhagen.
Naomi Klein, in the opening of The Klimaforum – “The People’s Climate Conference” said that “it is our responsibility to be angry”. Yes, we are angry, like our brothers and sisters from Tuvalu. We have a responsibility to the future generations; we have a responsibility to our planet that hosts us; we have a responsibility to the plants and animals, which cannot talk, walk or chant slogans, but most of which would cease to exist as an effect of global warming. And we know that each and every negotiation in Copenhagen, each one degree increase in temperature, each day that is spent without reaching an agreement, will actually determine how many people will die, how many people will become climate refugees, how many people will fall into poverty, how many people will experience hunger, how many plant and animal species will be extinguished. The negotiations so far cannot be explained by any logic, any wisdom or any conscience. What increases the severity of global warming, and leaving the poor people, and living species helpless in front of this severity, is the product of the attitudes of the corporations - that operate only with the aim of maximising profits - which don’t care about life; the callousness of the governments that act as if they are the representatives of the corporations, their fixation with the fossil fuels; the systems and ideologies that are based on encouragement solely of consumption, ignoring completely the needs of human beings and the environment.
We, activists who organize events all around the world, tens of thousands of people who filled the streets of Copenhagen, scream out loudly: “we will not die quietly”.
We are calling out to the governments participating to Copenhagen Summit: Copenhagen is actually the last chance for YOU. Either you prepare an international treaty that accepts responsibility and aims to reduce the atmospheric carbon dioxide level below 350 ppm, doesn’t allow carbon trade, and opens the technological, financial and clean energy resources that are required to stop climate change to international use without making these a bargaining issue, or you will be guilty in the eyes of billions of people for dragging humanity and the planet into a catastrophe - knowingly, willingly, deliberately, in spite of all the warnings, and for corporate profits, for oil, for coal, for arms, for war...
We will not let this happen.
